Career Overview

Medical Assistants prepare patients for examinations by taking temperature, weight, blood pressure and pulse, and then aid physicians during exams and treatments. They may give injections, draw blood, prepare lab specimens, and conduct evaluation testing. They also have administrative duties such as billing and collections, scheduling appointments, maintaining files, preparing reports, and designing office procedures.

Medical Assistants are multi-skilled health professionals specifically educated to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative and clinical duties. The practice of medical assisting directly influences the public's health and well-being, and requires mastery of a complex body of knowledge and specialized skills requiring both formal education and practical experience that serve as standards for entry into the profession.

Students can expect to complete the program in approximately one year by attending day and evening classes on a full time basis, or within two years on a part time basis or evening classes only.
